  2. born in Austria. His works, which include
  3. Deschooling Society 1971, Towards a History
  4. of Need 1978, and Gender 1983, are a critique
  5. against contemporary economic development,
  6. especially in the Third World. Illich was
  7. born in Vienna and has lived in the USA and
  8. Latin America. He believes that modern
  9. technology and bureaucratic institutions are
  10. destroying peasant skills and
  11. self-sufficiency and creating a new form of
  12. dependency: on experts, professionals, and
  13. material goods. True liberation, he believes,
  14. can only be achieved by abolishing the
  15. institutions on which authority rests, such
  16. as schools and hospitals.
